John E. Rastall was a British-born Milwaukee, Wisconsin resident active in abolitionist activities and newspaper publishing before he served as First Lieutenant and adjutant of the First Maryland Eastern Shore Volunteers, U.S.A. during the Civil War. After the war, he published newspapers in Kansas and worked for the Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C. From the description of Papers of John E. Rastall, 1861-1864.
