William Bowker Preston, 1830-1908, fourth presiding bishop of the Mormon Church, was born in Virginia. In 1852, Preston joined the California gold rush. He settled in Yolo County, California where he met and married Harriet Thatcher in 1858. In 1859 he joined the Hezikiah Thatcher family in settling Cache Valley--located on the Utah-Idaho border.
