Amelia Fysh was brought up in Grimsby. She worked for the Royal Signal Corps during the War and then trained as an emergency teacher, 1945-1947. Following a period teaching at Strand Primary Infants, Grimsby, she undertook further teacher training at Risley Training College, 1947-1948, becoming a qualified teacher in 1948.
