John Edward Lloyd was born on 5 May 1861 at Liverpool. His family originally hailed from Penybontfawr, Montgomeryshire, and Lloyd remained loyal to these roots throughout his life. He was educated at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and subsequently at Lincoln College, Oxford, graduating in 1885 with a first class degree in history.
