Professor G. B. Mathews went on holiday in 1898 to Switzerland. During his stay he transcribed part of the Berne Manuscript for Professor W. Lewis Jones which contained the Historia Regum Britanniae . Professor Jones of the English Department of the University College of North Wales was at the time engaged in research on the place of the work of Geoffrey of Monmouth in the development of the Arthurian legend.

Historia Regum Britanniae by Geoffrey of Monmouth traces the history of the kings of Britain down to Cadwaladr Fendigaid.
