Sir Thomas Browne (1605-1682), physician and author, was born in London on 19 October 1605, and attended Winchester College and Broadgates Hall, Oxford (B.A., 1626; M.A., 1629). He practised medicine in Oxfordshire before studying at Montpellier and Padua. He graduated M.D. at Leyden in 1633, and practised thereafter in Norwich. He was knighted in 1671.
