Sir Thomas Browne

Sir Thomas Browne (1605-1682), physician and author, was born in London on 19 October 1605, and attended Winchester College and Broadgates Hall, Oxford (B.A., 1626; M.A., 1629). He practised medicine in Oxfordshire before studying at Montpellier and Padua. He graduated M.D. at Leyden in 1633, and practised thereafter in Norwich. He was knighted in 1671. Browne's treatise, Religio medici, was published in 1642, and translated subsequently on the continent. Browne died at his home in Norwich on 19 October 1682.
