Joseph Robert Fahey Jr. was born on July 22, 1936 in Brighton, Massachusetts to parents Joseph Fahey and Mary Regan. Fahey graduated from Boston College High in 1953 and entered the Society of Jesus in 1955. He then attended Boston College, receiving a bachelor of humanities degree in 1960 and a masters degree in philosophy in 1961.
