Collection (1942-1945) of materials belonging to Wray Raphael Herring, a member of the U.S. Navy B-1 Band which was the first all-African American Navy Band during World War II. Included are programs, clippings, and sound recordings of radio broadcasts (78 RPM vinyl radio transcription discs) relating to the U.S. Navy B-1 Band; and official correspondence, programs, printed forms, sheet music signed by members of the U.S. Navy B-1 Band, a poem and other printed materials relating to Herring's service in the U.S. Navy B-1 Band, the U.S. Navy Pre-Flight School Band and Orchestra ("The Cloudbuster Band") at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and the Manana Ridge Band (while at the Manana Barracks in Hawaii).

John Samuel Gilmer was born March 14, 1925 in Greensboro, N.C. He was the only child of John H. and Anna Smith Gilmer. Gilmer attended Dudley High School in Greensboro and graduated early to enlist in the United States Navy during World War II. The United Statess Navy B-1 Band was the first all-African American Navy Band during World War II. In 1942, the best African American musicians from the state of North Carolina were assembled and the band was formed in Raleight on May 27. Wray Raphael Herring (1926-2010) was born in Parkersburg, Sampson County, North Carolina on January 31, 1926. Herring moved to Greensboro, N.C. and joined the United States Navy during World War II. Herring was a part of U.S. Navy Pre-Flight School Band and Orchestra, the U.S. Navy B-1 Band, and the Manana Ridge Band in which he played trombone and sang.
