Bernard O'Dowd was born in Victoria, Australia; both parents were Irish immigrants, and infused their son with stories of his heritage. At fifteen he started college, began publishing poetry at sixteen, and at seventeen, after an injury to his father, he began working, ultimately becoming a legal draftsman. Influenced by patriotism, his Irish heritage, and the poetry of Walt Whitman, O'Dowd became a prolific writer and active editor, often using a pseudonym. An important poet in his day, his popularity has declined since his death.
