After attending Harrow School, Martindale converted to Catholicism and joined the Jesuits. He studied and later taught at Oxford. Martindale stayed in Denmark from the time of its invasion until the end of World War II. He published widely and supported a number of causes including liturgical renewal, missionary work, and the Apostleship of the Sea.
