Lucretia Rudolph Garfield was born on a farm outside Garretsville, Ohio, in 1832. She met James Abram Garfield while both were students at Geauga Academy in Chester, Ohio, and the two married in 1858. Following her husband's assassination in 1881 she lived much of her life at their home in Mentor, Ohio, before dying in 1918 while wintering in Pasadena, California.

Educated at Western Reserve Eclectic College and became a teacher. Married James A. Garfield in 1858 and became First Lady in 1881. After President Garfield was assassinated in July 1881, she retired to the Garfield Estate in Mentor, Ohio.
