HRH Prince Leopold George Duncan Albert, 1st Duke of Albany, KG, KT, PC, GCSI, GCMG, hon DCL, Oxford (1876), colonel in the Army was born at Buckingham Palace, London in 1853, the fourth son of Queen Victoria. He was created Duke of Albany, Earl of Clarence and Baron Arklow in 1881, and on 30 June 1881 he formally opened University College Nottingham (now the University of Nottingham). In the following year he married HRH Princess Helena (1861-1922), third daughter of HSH Georg Viktor, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont. He died in Cannes in 1884.
