James Clinton (1736-1812), a civil engineer, surveyor, and Revolutionary War officer, was married to Mary DeWitt. Their sons were Alexander, DeWitt, and Charles Clinton. Robert B. Norton and Samuel L. Norton were James Clinton's sons-in-laws.

Dewitt Clinton (1769-1828) was mayor of New York City, governor of New York, and a United States Senator. His sons were Charles A. and DeWitt Clinton, Jr.

George Clinton (1739-1812) was governor of New York, 1777-1792, and Vice-President under Jefferson and Madison. His father was Charles, Sr. (1690-1773), his brother was Charles, Jr. (1734-1791), and his son was George, Jr. (1778-1813)
