Smith, born in Upton, Massachusetts, earned A.B. and M.A. degrees at Woodstock College and was ordained in Italy (1927). He travelled and studied throughout Europe and earned a Ph.D. from the Gregorian University in Rome (1928). He taught modern languages, European history, and church history at Weston College and Boston College. Smith was a distinguished linguist who read and spoke ten languages. He was passionate about horticulture and fishing. Smith died in 1962.
