Mireles, E. E. (Edmundo Eduardo), 1905-1987
Variant namesMexican-American pioneers of bilingual education in Texas, E.E. and Jovita González Mireles, were advocates for the teaching of Spanish language in primary schools from 1939 until their deaths in the 1980s. E.E. Mireles served as an educational administrator and policy maker, and helped to found the Pan American Council, dedicated to the study of Spanish, Latin America and its people. Jovita González Mireles taught in the public school system and wrote the novels, Caballero and Dew on the Thorn.

Born Edmundo Eduardo Mireles (Nov. 20, 1905) in Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico; spent his childhood in Mexico and San Antonio, Texas. Graduated from University of Texas at Austin in 1931, taught in San Antonio and Del Rio before moving to Corpus Christi in 1939. Started Spanish program for grade school children in 1940; also active in setting up programs for adult education and summer programs to teach English to pre-schoolers. Leader in local LULAC chapter and other organizations. Co-authored several Spanish textbooks and teaching guides. Died Mar. 17, 1987.
