This expedition was part of a series of expeditions in cooperation with the United States National Museum (USNM), the New York Botanical Garden, and the Gray Herbarium of Harvard University. The purpose of these expeditions was to increase the amount of botanical collections from South America. The expedition gathered information about economic plants, which could be of value to the horticultural and agriculture interests of the United States, and made collections of approximately 6,000 botanical specimens and 100 jars of fruit seeds and plants. USNM associate curator Joseph Nelson Rose and photographer George Munson Rose participated. The expedition also traveled through Cuba, Panama and Haiti.
