The New Mexico Folklore Society (NMFS) was established in the spring of 1931 by a group of five people who met in Hodgin Hall at the University of New Mexico. Anita Osuna, then head of the Spanish Department, organized this meeting by inviting another Spanish instructor, Lolita H. Pooler; T.M. Pearce of the English Department; Lansing Bloom of the History Department; and James P. Threlkeld, owner of the New Mexico Bookstore. These founding members agreed that the purpose of the Society would be to collect and preserve New Mexico folklore. The members elected officers, drew up a constitution, and set dues and dates for meetings.
