Author and educator Arthur O. Lewis served as Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Professor of English at the Pennsylvania State University from 1950. His annual Directory of Utopian Scholars, which he began compiling in 1958, was one of the publications that eventually brought about the establishment of the Society for Utopian Studies and the Associazione Internazionale per gli Studi sulle Utopie. Lewis authored Of Men and Machines and American Utopias: Selected Short Fiction, and co-authored several books including The Case for Poetry: a Critical Anthology. Lewis was active in the Science Fiction Research Association, served as president of the Pennsylvania Federation of Teachers, and as a delegate to the U.S. Committee on UNESCO in 1959.
