Martin, John A., 1839-1889
Variant namesMartin came to Kansas in 1857. In 1858 he began his journalistic career by purchasing the Squatter Soverign, a proslavery paper published in Atchison. He changed the name of the paper to Freedom's Champion and later to the Atchison Daily Champion, which he published until his death. Martin was governor of Kansas, 1885-1889.
