John Campbell is profssor emeritus of the University of Birmingham, School of Metallurgy and Materials, Interdisiplinary Research Centre in Materials Processing, where he was the Professor of Casting Technology from October, 1989 to September, 2004. Prior to that time, he was the technical director of Costworth Castings Limited and the Director of Cosworth Research and Development Limited (1978-1985) where he coducted research perfecting the Cosworth Casting Process - the primary focus of this collection. The Cosworth Casting Process is the avoidance of the nucleation of pores by the control of metal cleanliness made possible by the pumping of clean metals (using a counter-gravity process) into sand molds that are highly accurate (due to the use of zircon sand). This revolutionary process allowed Cosworth racing engine casting failures to be reduced from 50% to 0% a mere thirteen months after the process was developed. The collection also includes references to casting research and biographical/career-related information.
