Mrs. John M. (Fannie Geraldine Snell) Patterson, compiler of the scrapbook, was a daughter of Boulder County miner James Snell. She worked with the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper for a decade before transferring to the Fort Collins Express (per her wedding notice from the Denver Daily News on 2 December 1903, which contains photos of her and her husband). John Patterson, involved with mining operations in Gilpin County, Colorado, was a civil war veteran and Colorado pioneer.
John M. Patterson, born near Fairfield, Iowa, on 20 May 1846, died in Wellington, Colorado, on 5 May 1929. The son of pioneer settlers of southeastern Iowa, he lied about his age in order to enlist in the Iowa Volunteer Infantry, in which he was a drummer boy until 1864.
