The position of Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences was established in 1946. The Associate Dean was responsible for implementing the policies and plans set by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. James V. McCummiskey, S.J., served as the first associate dean from 1946 to 1949. He was followed by Cletus F. Hartmann, S.J., from 1950 to 1951; Richard E. Tischler, S.J., from 1952 to 1956; Hugh B. Rodman, S.J., from 1958 to 1970; Charles W. Hart from 1972 to 1977; and John E. Festle, S.J., from 1977 to 1982.
