The office of the president was created in 1870 with the founding of St. Ignatius College. Arnold Damen, S.J., served as the first president from 1870-1872. Loyola University Chicago has had 23 presidents in its 138 year history, all members of the Society of Jesus. The first 12 served as presidents of St. Ignatius College. When the college was re-chartered as Loyola University in 1909, the 12th president, Alexander J. Burrowes, S.J., became the 1st president of Loyola University. The 23rd and current president of Loyola University Chicago is Michael J. Garanzini, S.J., whose administration began in 2001.
