Kane, William T. (William Terence), 1880-1946
Variant namesWilliam T. Kane was born October 20, 1880, in Chicago, one of six children of Lawrence and Elizabeth McCarthy Kane. He attended Holy Family School and St. Ignatius College before entering the Society of Jesus in 1898. During World War I he was a Chaplain for the 35th Division; Harry S. Truman was a major with the 35th Division during the same period. In 1930 Kane was named University Librarian at Loyola University in Chicago, a position he retained until his death in 1946. While University Librarian, Father Kane established the Jesuitca and Napoleonica collections at the library and created an archival collection documenting the history of Loyola University, Jesuit history, and local (Chicago) Catholic history.
