Nathan Hatfield, Philadelphia surgeon, was born on 6 May 1844. He was a son of physician Nathan L. Hatfield. During the Civil War, he was assigned to the military hospitals of Race Street, in Philadelphia, and Haddonfield. He received an M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1865, practiced medicine with his father, and then became assistant to Samuel D. Gross. Hatfield was attached to the surgical staff of Philadelphia Hospital from 1875 to 1884, was a consulting surgeon to the State Hospital at Norristown, Pa., and a surgeon at the Charity Hospital of Philadelphia and the Northern Dispensary. In 1872, 1879 and 1880, he studied surgical techniques in Europe. Nathan Hatfield died of pneumonia on 6 Jan. 1887.

Nathan Lewis Hatfield, Philadelphia physician, was born in Montgomery Co., Pa., on 2 Aug. 1804. He had several children, including physician Nathan Hatfield. Hatfield died of bronchitis on 29 Aug. 1887.

Hatfield attended lectures in the Department of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania during the 1823-1824 and 1824-1825 academic sessions and then began to attend lectures at Jefferson Medical College and received an M.D. from its first graduating class in 1826. He practiced medicine in the Northern Liberties, served on the city's Board of Health, and was a consulting physician and manager at the Northern Dispensary. Nathan L. Hatfield became a fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1855.
