Joyce A. Hughes has been a professor at the Northwestern University School of Law since 1975. In 1971, as a faculty member of the University of Minnesota Law School, Hughes became the first African American female tenure track professor at a majority white institution in the United States. Hughes served on the Chicago Board of Education from 1980 to 1982 and was involved in school desegregation policy.
