A renowned aviation pioneer in both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, Russian-American Igor Sikorsky immigrated to the United States in 1919 and founded the Sikorsky Aero Engineering Corporation in 1923 (now the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation). By the 1930s, he had developed the "flying boats" of Pan American Airways. He continued his work with helicopters and designed the Vought-Sikorsky VS-300 which established the rotor configuration still used in helicopters today. In 1942, Sikorsky modified his original rotor design to produce the Sikorsky R-4, which became the first mass-produced helicopter. In addition to his engineering skills, Sikorsky, a devout Russian Orthodox Christian, authored two philosophical, religious books. He retired in 1957 at the age of 68 but continued to work as a consultant for the Sikorsky Corporation until his death in 1972.
