Organizational History
Food for Freedom, Inc., was founded in 1943 by Harold Weston (1894-1972), a modernist painter who devoted his work during the World War II period to combating hunger among refugees in Europe and Asia. He lobbied Eleanor Roosevelt with the idea of building a national coalition of organizations to provide humanitarian aid to starving peoples, and was credited by her for helping bring about the United National Relief and Rehabilitation Administration.
