Protestant Christian family prominently involved in Christian missions and evangelistic work both in the United States and internationally; Peter, Sr. founded Star of Hope Mission in Paterson, New Jersey in 1913; Peter, Sr and Amelia had nine children; John Cornelius (born January 18, 1907) and his wife, Elizabeth Alden Scott (born February 22, 1906) were both missionaries in China and became widely known after their their murder in 1934 by Communist soliders. Their deaths made a very strong impression on Fundamentalist Christianity in the United States and inspired many others to become missionaries.
