Francis T. Nicholls graduated in 1855 from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, studied law at the University of Louisiana (subsequently Tulane University) in New Orleans, and practiced law in Napoleonville, La. He joined the Confederate Army in 1861; lost an arm and a foot in the Shenandoah Valley campaign and the Battle of Chancellorsville, respectively; and achieved the rank of brigadier general. He twice served as Governor of Louisiana (1877-1880, 1888-1892) and was a justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court (1892-1911, Chief Justice 1892-1904).
