Bolognetti family.

Hide Profile

According to tradition the Bolognetti family originated in Umbria but moved to Bologna where they were of modest means. Many of their descendants were members of the armed forces, among them Colonel Carlo Bolognetti, commissioner general of the ecclesiastical forces in Avignon. Among the family members was Giovanni, a famous jurist. There were also two cardinals and many prelates.

Alberto Bolognetti was born in Bologna in 1536. He obtained great fame in law, in which field he was designated laureate in 1562. Under the sponsorship of Cardinal Paleotto he continued his studies and taught at Salerno for nine years. In 1576 Gregory XIII called him to Rome and sent him as nuncio to Florence in the company of Duke Francesco I. In 1578 he was sent to the nunciature for Venice and the next year was given the bishopric of Massa and Polonia. In 1581 the pope recalled him and appointed him nuncio to Spain and then to Poland. As nuncio his letters and instructions contributed to the implementation of the decrees of the Council of Trent.

In 1583 Gregory XIII named him a cardinal. He died at Villac in Carinthia in 1585 while returning to Rome for the election of the new pope (Sixtus V). He was buried in the family tomb in the Church of Santa Maria dei Servi in Bologna. He published a number of works on civil law.

Mario Bolognetti was one of the counts of Vicovaro where he was born in 1690. From his earliest years he had dedicated himself to service to the Holy See. Innocent XIII (1721-1724) named him an apostolic protonotary and then promoted him to the Apostolic Camera. Benedict XIV named him to the College of Cardinals on September 9, 1743. In 1750 Mario was appointed to the legation of Ravenna. He held successively various positions in the Roman congregations. He died at Rome in 1756 at the age of sixty-six and was buried in Rome.

The house of Bolognetti came to an end in 1775 with the death of Giacomo, who was survived by a daughter who married Count Virginio Cenci. Count Virginio transmitted to his own son, Alessandro, the maternal name with which he was inscribed among the patrician Romans and conscripted with "senatus consulto" on June 12, 1838. The Bolognetti have two chapels and many tombs in Bologna, Pavia, and Rome, all of which have inscriptions in memory of the various members of the family. Between 1647 and 1761 four members of the family were named cardinals. The precise relationship between the Fondo Bolognetti and the family was not determined.
