University of Alabama at Birmingham. Office of Media Relations.

The Office of Media Relations was created in 1990, but its origin may be traced to the 1960s. During the 1960s, Fred Woodress served as assistant to the vice president for health affairs for public relations. He was often assisted in his public relations responsibilities by Gloria Goldstein-Howton who served primarily as assistant to the Medical Center deans. In 1969, Fred Woodress left UAB, and Dr. Joseph F. Volker reorganized Medical Center public relations activities at UAB. He named Gloria Goldstein-Howton as the director of the Office of Public Affairs. She was charged with centrally administering all public relations activities at UAB. The Office of Public Affairs became the Office of Institutional Relations in 1978, the Office of University Relations in 1980, and finally the Office of Public Relations and Marketing in 1990. Mike Ellis, who succeeded Goldstein-Howton in 1990, created the Office of Media Relations within the Office of Public Relations and Marketing to directly oversee public relations activities at UAB.
