Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester (1532?-1588), English courtier who rose to power as a favorite of Queen Elizabeth. Placed in command of the Dutch campaign in 1585, he was proclaimed Governor-General in the Netherlands, but the expedition foundered and he returned to England at the end of 1586.
