Albert Gallatin Riddle (1816-1902) was born in Monson, Massachusetts, and moved with his family to Newbury, Ohio, in 1817. He was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1840, and was the prosecuting attorney fro Geauga County, Ohio, from 1840-1846. Riddle married Caroline Avery of Chardon, Ohio, in 1845. He was a representative in the Ohio state legislature from 1848-1850, and he moved to Cleveland, Ohio, upon leaving the state legislature. He served as teh prosecuting attorney for Cuyahoga County, Ohio in 1856, and was elected as a Republican to the 37th United States Congress in 1861. While in Congress in 1861, he made criticisms in connection with the Battle of Bull Run which caused much adverse publicity. From 1863-1864 he served as United States Consul at Matanzas, Cuba. He continued his law career in 1867 when he was retained by the State Department in the prosecution of John H. Surratt for his part in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. From 1877-1889 he served as attorney for the District of Columbia, and from 1875-1895 he published a number of novels, biographies, and recollections. He died in Washington, D.C. in 1902.
