Franklin Hall Williams was an African-American civil rights lawyer, diplomat, and foundation president who worked towards fostering better relations between the black and white communities in the U.S. and between the African-American community and Africa.
Williams held many positions, among them was the West Coast regional director for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), 1951-1956; California Assistant Attorney General, 1959-1961; Special Assistant, Peace Corps, 1961-1963; U.S. Ambassador to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, 1963-1965; U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, 1965-1968; director, Columbia University Urban Center, 1968-1970; president of Phelps-Stokes Fund, 1970-1990. Williams died in 1990.
