Thomas C. Cochran was one of the leading business historians of the last half of the 20th century. He is particularly known for an approach that stressed the social context of American business and the sociological and psychological characteristics of business leaders, as opposed to earlier approaches that focused on the firm or the individual entrepreneur. After his retirement from the University of Pennsylvania, he was in residence at the then Eleutherian Mills Historical Library as Senior Resident Scholar in the late 1970s, at which time, he donated this memoir of his professional life.
