James, Davis Lawler, 1848-1933
Variant namesDavis L. James was proprietor of the U.P. James, a bookstore in Cincinnati, from 1889 to 1933 (later known as the James Book Store Co.). He attended the Unitarian Church and was a member of the Literary Club.

Davis Lawler James (1848-1933) was the son of Uriah Pierson James and successor to the family business.
U.P. (Uriah Pierson) James (1811-1889) was the founder of one of the nation's pioneering book retailing businesses and a major figure in the publishing and bookselling industries of Cincinnati, Ohio, during the nineteenth century; Cincinnati being one of the largest manufacturers of books at that time. In partnership with his brother, J. A. (Joseph Allen) James (1807-1882), and others, U.P. James built an extensive business once referred to as "the Harper's of the West."
