Wisconsin. State Planning Board
Variant namesLegislation of 1935 created the State Planning Board as an independent agency to succeed the State Regional Planning Committee (Laws of 1935, Chap. 165) (see WIHV87-A1628).
The Board was composed of one member each from the Public Service Commission, the Tax Commission, the Department of Agriculture and Markets, and the Board of Control; two representatives from the University of Wisconsin; three citizens appointed by the Governor; the State Chief Engineer; the State Health Officer; the Director of Conservation; the State Superintendent of Public Instruction; the Director of the Budget; the Governor (ex-officio chairman); and the Director of Regional Planning (from the Highway Commission) who was the Secretary and administrative officer. Legislation of 1943 transferred responsibility for the promotion of aeronautics from the State of Wisconsin Aeronautic Board to the State Planning Board (Laws of 1943, Chapter 269). This function was later moved to a new Aeronautics Commission (see WIHV85-A789) in 1945 (Laws of 1945, Chapter 513). Legislation of 1951 replaced the State Planning Board with the State Planning Division (see WIHV87-A1268) within the Bureau of Engineering (WIHV89-A419) (Laws of 1951, Chapter 397).
The Board was charged with studying the state's land use plans and development of highways, waterways, harbors, sewage systems, water pollution control, and parks.
