Goold Brown (1791-1857) of Providence, R.I., was a teacher and grammarian whose grammar texts appear to have been influential into the twentieth century. After an unsatisfactory experience in a mercantile house, Brown started teaching in 1811. In 1814, he opened an academy in New York City, which he operated for twenty years. His most important works were The Institutes of English Grammar (1823) and the ponderous Grammar of English Grammars (1851). Brown moved to Lynn, Mass., in the 1830s and devoted the balance of his life there to the further study of grammar and the writing and revision of various publications.
