Members of the Society of Friends organized the New York Association for the Instruction of Coloured Male Adults in 1816, with schools established at Rose St. and Flatbush. The stated purpose of the Association was to enable black Americans to read the scriptures through free instruction. The schools met weekly under the management of Reuben Leggett (1791-1826) and Isaac Hatch ( - ).
