Bodmer, a young Swiss painter, accompanied Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied, 1832-1834, on a scientific expedition into the American West. Their works as an artist and naturalist were later published in a book. Bodmer painted extensively American Indians and landscapes of the West and New England scenes.

Swiss artist Karl Bodmer accompanied Prince Maximilian of Wied on a two-year natural science expedition to the American West in 1832-1834.
During this expedition, Bodmer produced a large quantity of field sketches and watercolors depicting the North American landscape and the American Indian. Later upon his return to Europe, Bodmer set up residence in Paris and supervised the preparation of eighty-one aquatints engraved after his original art work to accompany Maximilian's expedition account, Travels in the interior of North America.
