Leffingwell, Albert, 1845-1916
Variant namesA native of Aurora, N.Y., A.J. Leffingwell received his medical degree from the Long Island Hospital Medical College in 1874. Soon after he joined the medical staff of Our Home on the Hill Side, the water-cure established in 1858 in Dansville, N.Y. by Leffingwell's uncle, James C. Jackson. After the fire of June 1882, the institution re-opened as The Sanitarium (1883) with James H. Jackson, the founder's son, and three of the Leffingwell brothers as owner-managers. A bitter struggle for ownership and control in the late 1880s resulted in A.J. Leffingwell's sale of his rights and holdings.
