Dr. Hugh Lenox Hodge was a prominent Philadelphia physician who specialized in obstetrics, becoming one of the most renowned figures in that field in the nineteenth century. Hodge also contributed to fighting the cholera epidemic in Philadelphia during 1832.

Born in Philadelphia, Hugh L. Hodge attended Princeton College and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He began teaching at the Medical Institute in Philadelphia in 1823. In 1835 he became Professor of Obstetrics and the Diseases of Women and Children at the University of Pennsylvania, where he remained until his retirement in 1863.
