Emily Griffith Opportunity School (Denver, Colo.)

Emily Griffith (1868-1947) moved to Denver, Colo. in 1895 to work as a grade school teacher for Denver Public Schools. She also specialized in teaching literacy, night school and citizenship classes. Griffith later worked for the Colo. State Department of Education. Although Informal classes had been held as early as 1910, in 1916, Griffith, in cooperation with the State, officially founded the Opportunity School. Organized to provide adult and vocational eduction, the school was renamed the Emily Griffith Opportunity School in 1934 after Griffith's retirement as the schools first principal (1916-1933). The Emily Griffith Opportunity School continues to provide vocational education for high school students and adults.
