The Office of the Vice President was established at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1932 as part of a new plan of administration for the Institute.The vice president served as an ex-officio member of the MIT Corporation, the governing body of the Institute. Vannevar Bush served as vice president from 1932 to 1938 when he left MIT to become president of the Carnegie Institution in Washington, DC.
