John Pope was born in Prince William County, Virginia, in 1770. After studying law, he moved to Springfield, Kentucky, and was admitted to the bar. Pope served in both houses of the Kentucky General Assembly and both houses of the U.S. Congress during his career. For six years, Pope held the position as territorial governor of Arkansas. He died in Springfield in 1845.
