Philip St. George Cooke was born near Leesburg, Va., Jun. 12, 1809 ; graduated from West Point in 1827 and assigned to the 6th Infantry as 2nd lieutenant. He was promoted to captain in 1835 ; served in the Black Hawk War, 1832; commanded Mississippi volunteer battalion in Mexican War; went on Native American expeditions; became major of 2nd Dragoons in 1847; commanded in Kansas in troubles of 1856-57; was made brig.gen. and served in Union Army in Civil War.
