The name Il Riposo is taken from a 16th century style of religious painting. Movement I suggested by Jan van Eyck's altarpiece the March of the Magi. Movement II after a Byzantine mosaic in the basilica of Saint Apollinare-Nuovo at Ravenna; Movement III suggested by a painting in the Riposo style by Anthony Van Dyck. Movement II based on an old Roman tune, Urbs Beata Jerusalem. Movements I and III originally composed 1921, as part of the composer's choral setting of Stabat Mater Speciosa with text by Jacopone da Todi (1230-1306). Movement II is new.
