Cincinnati Union Terminal Company

Hide Profile

The Cincinnati Union Terminal Company was created to build a united terminal for Cincinnati to replace the many stations scattered throughout the city. This would be shared by seven railroad companies, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, the Norfolk and Western Railway, the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Southern Railway Company. The site selected for this terminal was on the edge of the Mill Creek, an industrial area of the city. As the land contracts in the collection show, there were residential homes, tenements and businesses in this section of the West End of Cincinnati. The Cincinnati Union Terminal Company bought these lands and working with the city and railroads were able to construct a terminal with an original style that quickly became a landmark in the city when it opened in 1933.
